Last year, the race garnered over 10,000 participants, making the group realize that they should expand. Managing member of Reed Street Productions and co-creator of Run For Your Lives, Ryan Hogan, told STYD,"Even before we officially launched the first race in Darlington, we started planning to invade other popular cities. We'd received so much demand and interest from consumers in the U.S. and abroad that we knew we needed to expand,"
Hogan continued, "We learned a lot from our first race and are excited to bring the improved Run For Your Lives experience to zombie-enthusiasts and runners. The zombies are coming to a city near you; get ready to Run For Your Lives!"
The Run For Your Lives 5k race is an obstacle course that pits the participants against "zombies" as they try and complete the course without being "eaten." Since the race is of the non-violent nature, and participants can't actually be eaten, runners wear a flag football belt containing 3 flags, which they must keep safe. If the runner loses all of their flags by the end of the race--they've become the walking dead. Umm, awesome, right?
Registration for each event opens up three months prior to the date of the race. Participants will receive a race shirt, admission to the Apocalypse Party, and a medal showcasing their survival or death. The top male and female winners will receive prizes for each age bracket as well.
Not a runner? No problem! The event also needs volunteers to help hand out water, direct runners throughout course, interact with spectators, and much more!
If some of you are thinking that this is all just a waste of time--it's not. All proceeds to the event are donated to the American Red Cross. So, runner or not, one should get out there and watch the action; it's for a good cause!
I am beyond excited to hear that this event has expanded to more cities around the U.S. because I have been DYING to do this. I saw the race featured on an episode of "Attack of the Show" and it looked like so much fun; it was like a giant Halloween party!
